December 12 - Field, BC - 5525 km!

Ah...Home Sweet Home! (almost)  Lori and Chris are happy to be closer to their goal and closer to home and the end of the Trek.  But this isn't the end yet.  This week Lori is taking a few days off of walking to make a few changes.  The RV that they have been using needs to be returned and so they will be travelling home and returning with a van to use for the final segment of the Trek.  A side benefit is that Lori and Chris will see their families before Christmas!  It has been eight months since they have seen them.

December 22 - Started walking again. Lori and Chris enjoyed their time with their families and a chance to relax a bit.  Lori suffers from insomnia and so she goes about 3 or 4 days without much sleep until her body shuts down and she sleeps for 24 hours.  Then the cycle starts over.

December 24 - arrived in Golden today - One of Lori's dreams has always been to spend Christmas or New Year's in the mountains.  Now she gets to do both.  Christmas will be spent in Golden and she hopes to be in Revelstoke by New Year's

December 27 - 5600 kms

December 29 - Lori will be walking through Roger's Pass today and she will be crossing into the final time zone - Pacific Time!  Roger's Pass is one of her most dangerous walks as the road is steep and full of narrow turns.  Not alot of shoulder here!  She is doing well and is encouraged that weather has been on her side and she is able to do 25 to 30 kms a day.  All the major snow storms have been just ahead of her or just behind her!  Let's hope this keeps up!

January 1, 2004 - Revelstoke - 5695 kms - Happy New Year's from Lori and Chris!  Lori says, "The mountains are truly inspiring.  They also command a great respect, as the Park Rangers have asked I check in with them every day because of their concern for avalanches along my route through the Rogers Pass.  It's still very cold, but my latest challenge is staying dry as I walk.  The high humidity combined with my exertion makes it tough, and being wet is not good when it is -15C!"

January 7 - Salmon Arm - 5750 kms

Comments from Lori: "I now know what a popsicle feels like after a few hours in the freezer! Monday was so cold that the inside of my jacket was frozen like a sheet of ice from just my perspiration! I had to stop as I just couldn't get warm enough. Only 12km that day. By the time you read this I will probably be dealing with the snow storm you just had. Wish me luck! My big news is that I have set a firm date for finishing the Trans Canada Trek for MS! I will be finishing at English Bay Beach in Vancouver on Sunday, February 8th.  I will be walking through Mission a couple of days prior to this.  I can hardly wait!  See you soon!"

January 13 - West of Kamloops - 5900 kms

"I get more excited every day about finishing! It's hard for me to believe that I only have 500km to go. It may seem like a lot, but considering I've walked 6,000km so far, it is just around the corner for me.  My senses are alive! Everything is so familiar and I find myself getting emotional thinking about it. I can see, smell and generally feel that I am coming home.  I can't stop smiling. It doesn't seem to matter how I'm feeling, once I start walking all I can think about is seeing my family. I am also very proud of what has been accomplished. It will always be difficult to explain what it's like to walk across such a vast distance, but it has changed me in ways that I will never be able to fully explain." - Lori

January 14 - Kamloops - 5914 kms - 486 km to go!

Wow!  Who would have thought that walking down the mountains was worse than walking up?!  Lori's spine and legs are feeling pretty jarred to say the least.  Also, the weather is warmer at the lower elevations and Lori is actually finding it hot walking in her winter clothes!

January 21 - Cache Creek, BC - 6000kms

Comments from Lori: "On Tuesday I hit a milestone of 6,000km! That's even better news when I consider it only leaves me with just over 400km to go! I'm looking forward to entering into the scenic Fraser Canyon. Seeing it at a walking pace will truly allow me to appreciate its unique beauty. I hope the weather holds! I continue to be blessed with manageable weather and haven't even had to deal with any heavy rain. As with the past couple of weeks, I continue to become more and more excited about finishing. I visualize my homecoming everyday and look forward to seeing you all in a couple of weeks!"

January 26 - Hope

February 3 - Deroche

I (the webmaster) had a visitor in the gas station where I work!  Lori used to be a daily visitor as she took her walks about town and it is at Deroche's Shell Station that I got to know Lori and of her ambition to walk across Canada to raise awareness of MS.  After 9 1/2 months, it was nice to see that familiar smile poke her head in the door to say hello!  The kids at Deroche Elementary School got a visit from Lori too as they cheered her on in her journey.  (Note from Webmaster:  the cutie in the blue sweater holding the stuffed dinosaur to the left of Lori is my youngest, Liam)

February 5 - Vancouver - 6310 kms

Lori has been on the road for 284 days and is nearing her finish line.  She says, "This will be my last official trek update to all of you.  I continue to have mixed emotions about finishing, but the prevailing feelings are of happiness and accomplishment.  I had a wonderful turnout at the SAAN Store Pancake Breakfast in Mission last Sunday.  There were many people there I hadn't seen in a long time, in addition to a few faces from Manitoba I hadn't expected to see at all!  It was a wonderful time and I would like to thank everyone for their continued support.  I also received a warm welcome from the Downtown Business Association in Mission.  It was nice to have the merchants wish me well as I passed through the downtown core.  I even had a police escort out of town!  And no, it was a good thing!  See you this Sunday at the finish line or at the celebration at the Best Western in Mission!"
